1970 Maserati Ghibli 4.9 SS Spyder; 1 of just 4 RHD Manual examples produced. London Motor Show vehicle sitting in concours condition following full restoration in 2012. 



The Maserati Ghibli was launched at the 1966 Turin Motor Show; styled by Ghia it was instantly comparable to a Ferrari Daytona, directly competing in both looks and performance. The styling of the Ghibli was one of an incredibly low yet substantial 2-seater, and will always be regarded as one of the strongest designs of the 1960s. 

Until 1970, the Ghibli used a 4.7-litre V8 from the 5000 GT, however this was superseded in SS guise with a 4.9-litre seeing power rise to an impressive 335 bhp. However, the most special derivative of the Ghibli is undeniably the Spyder, launched in 1969 again as a rival for the Daytona equivalent. 

Ghibli production ceased in 1973, with around 1,150 Coupes produced and just 128 Spyders; of which only 46 came with the desirable SS performance upgrade. As with the Daytona, the Ghibli (especially the Spyder) was a car that sold extremely well in the USA, as such only 14 SS Spyders were built to original EU specification with a manual gearbox. 

The car that we are fortunate enough to offer is 1 of these 14 cars, however making it even more special is the fact it is 1 of just 4 originally supplied in Right Hand Drive. However, in addition it is also one of the finest Ghiblis in existence, both in terms of provenance and condition. 

Originally built for the 1970 London Motor Show, this late Spyder also comes complete with a comprehensive history file documenting diligent ownership over the years, complemented beautifully by original factory correspondence and period magazine articles. 

However, potentially superseding all of the above is the quality of the restoration that has recently been conducted on the car. Being completed in 2012, each of those that have worked on the car to make it present as beautifully as it does today have major international concours credits to their name, and such attention to detail and expertise clearly shows in the end result. 

Overseen by Carrozzeria Cremonini, the car was returned to its London Motor Show specification by stripping the car to bare chassis. Major mechanicals were completed by Guiseppe Candini, an ex Maserati race mechanic, who took care of the engine, gearbox, rear axle, suspension, exhaust, brakes and steering. 

Finally the electrics were sorted by William Gatti; the total hours spend on the car was around 2,650 hours with absolutely no expense spared. 

Having covered just under 900 miles since restoration, the car is UK registered and is accompanied by extensive photographs and invoices for all of the works completed; this truly is one of the finest Ghiblis in existence. 

With all Ghibli values rising (as well as Daytonas for that matter) the SS Spyder will forever be the most desirable and not only a wonderful investment prospect but also a fantastic car to drive; it is rare that a car as special as this comes to market and it would complement even the finest of collections.
